Zurich is usually the first city that comes to mind when thinking about Switzerland. It’s home to the country’s main airport and has the largest population. However, it isn’t a tourist destination in the way Rome or Paris are, and honestly there isn't that much to see. Personally, I was slightly disappointed by what Zurich had to offer.
That said, don’t worry. In this guide, I include a realistic one-day itinerary for Zurich because, even though I wouldn’t spend more than a day here, the city does have a pleasant European charm. I’m also sharing the best day trips from Zurich, which is where Switzerland really starts to shine.

🚂 Day Trips from Zurich
I spent 7 days in Switzerland during my Interrail trip (you can find all the details in my 15 Days Through Amsterdam, Switzerland, Slovenia & Vienna for Under 1,200€ post), and Zurich fell short after visiting other Swiss cities such as Lucerne, Bern or even Basel.
The good news is that all of those cities are just a short train ride away. Switzerland’s train system makes day trips surprisingly easy, so Zurich works better as a base than as a destination.
Depending on your travel pace and how much time you plan to spend here, you might be able to see more than one city. And if you’re also planning to head into the Swiss Alps, don’t worry, I’ll be sharing a guide on how to navigate that as well.
How to plan your days
- 1 day → Stick to Zurich. If you have a full day, make sure to stop by the Lindt Home of Chocolate. There’s honestly not much else to fill the time.
- 2-4 days → Use Zurich as a base and add day trips.
- 4+ days → Move around Switzerland. It’s very easy by train and you will truly experience what the country has to offer.
I have written comprehensive guides for each of the cities so you know exactly what to see without missing out on anything
- Lucerne in One Day, Rain or Shine
- Bern in Under 6 Hours: Everything You Really Can’t Miss
- 24 Hours in Basel: What to See When You’re Just Passing Through
Train distances between major Swiss cities
| Cities | Zurich | Lucerne | Bern | Basel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zurich | - | 40-50 mins | 1h-1h30 | 50 mins-1h15 |
| Lucerne | 40-50 mins | - | 1h | 1h-1h15 |
| Bern | 1h-1h30 | 1h | - | 1h |
| Basel | 50 mins-1h15 | 1h-1h15 | 1h | - |
My recommendation: prioritize Lucerne, and only visit Bern and Basel if you have extra time or if they’re on the way to your next destination.
All of these cities can be seen in under 6 hours, but Lucerne is the one where you could easily spend a full day, especially if the weather is warm.
To recap: if you have two full days and enjoy packed itineraries, I’d do Zurich and Lucerne on one day, and Bern and Basel on the other. You can swap the order depending on logistics.
🗺️ Overview Map
Now onto the Zurich itinerary, which includes all of the stops below.
✨ Need to know
⏱️ How many days to see Zurich
One day is enough. Two or more days only make sense if you’re planning day trips or hiking in the surrounding area.
📅 Best time to go
Zurich works year-round. Expect summer crowds, winter markets, and quieter shoulder seasons in spring and fall.
🚌 Getting around
Everything in central Zurich is within walking distance.
If you plan to visit the Lindt Home of Chocolate, you will need to take the S8 train from Zurich HB.
📌 One-Day Itinerary
I didn’t go inside any building in Zurich. Many were under construction, closed, or required an entrance fee. That’s part of why this itinerary is easy to complete in a short amount of time.
I structured the route so that you move from one side of the river to the other, crossing bridges along the way and getting a good overall feel for the city.
- Swiss National Museum - Castle-like exterior with vines that give it an interesting touch.
- Niederdorfstrasse - A charming street in the old town.
- Lindenhof - A square with an elevated view over the old town and the river.
- Augustinergasse - One of Zurich’s prettiest medieval streets. Narrow, colorful, and very photogenic.
- St. Peter’s Church - Known for its large clock tower. CHF 5 to go inside.
- Fraumünster Church - Iconic tower and a key part of Zurich’s skyline.
- Grossmünster - Free to visit and usually open even during renovations. Check the official website for the current status.
- Zürich Opera House - A beautiful building next to the lake, where you might spot some swans.
- Quaibrücke - Bridge crossing the river with nice views of Zurich’s tallest buildings.
- Bahnhofstrasse - Zurich’s main high-end shopping street.
-
Lindt Home of Chocolate - Chocolate museum and experience.
Book in advance. I didn’t, and after ending up with three
spare hours in Zurich, I really wished I had.
Slightly outside the city but easily accessible via S8 from Zurich HB.
🎯 TL;DR (Trip At a Glance)
Swiss National Museum → Niederdorfstrasse → Lindenhof → Augustinergasse → St. Peter’s Church → Fraumünster Church → Grossmünster → Zürich Opera House → Quaibrücke → Bahnhofstrasse → Lindt Home of Chocolate
